Tino’s 5-25 give Barbados emphatic 151-run victory

Guyana yesterday produced their worst ever batting performance since their first Regional One-Day game against the Windward Islands in St Lucia in 1976 when they slumped to their lowest total at this level and a 151-run defeat against Barbados in a one-sided match at Sabina Park.
Chasing 252 to win after leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo (6-36 from 10) registered the best One-Day bowling figures at Sabina Park, Guyana slumped to 6-4 as Tino Best (5-25) wrecked the top order by removing the first four batsmen inside the first five overs.
Davendra Bishoo celebrates another of his 6 wickets yesterday but it was a wasted effort as Guyana were bowled out for their lowest One-Day total by Barbados to lose by 151 runs
The South Americans who must now beat the Leeward Islands in their final preliminary round match tomorrow to qualify for the Semi-finals, never recovered despite a fighting 25 from Leon Johnson and crashed to 100 all out in 21.5 overs.
Yesterday’s result was also Guyana’s worst ever defeat surpassing the 135-run loss to Trinidad and Tobago in Essequibo in 1996 as Man-of-the-Match Best got support from Skipper Ryan Hinds who took 3-34 with his left-arm spin as Barbados qualified for the Semis with their second consecutive win in the 8-team competition.
Hinds (39 from 49 balls with 5 fours and six) and Dale Richards (56 from 59 balls with 7 fours) added 93 for the second wicket for Barbados before Jonathon Carter (60 from 63 balls with 2 fours a 4 sixes) and Kirk Edwards (33) put together 101 for the 4th wicket to put the Bajans in a strong position to post a huge total.
But once Bishoo, who bettered the 5-26 by Winston Benjamin for the Leeward Islands against Jamaica in 1992 at this ground, removed Carter, the Bajans lost their last 7 wickets for just 30 runs as Bishoo spun webs around the batsmen with prodigious turn and bounce.
Esuan Crandon produced an excellent opening spell in which he removed Kraigg Braithwaite (8) at 23-1 after the West Indies under-19 opener was dropped twice off his bowling in one over and supported Bishoo with 2-45.
Steven Jacobs (0-40 from) repeatedly beat the left-handers’ bat with turn and bounce while medium pacer Assad Fudadin had 1-35 in a tidy 8-over spell as the Bajans, who won the toss and elected to bat on track with preparation moisture completely lost their way in the last 9 overs.
Barbados, who lost to Guyana in the Caribbean T20 final in Trinidad two months ago, would have been disappointed with their eventual total after the good work by their top order batsmen who capitalized on four dropped catches and loose work in the field by Guyana.
But once a pumped-up Best removed Richard Ramdeen (0), Fudadin (1), Narsingh Deonarine (0) and Skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan (1) with just 6 runs on the board, the victory target seemed as tall as Mount Roraima.
Like in the first match against HPC when only Sarwan of the senior batsmen turned up to the party in their narrow 3-run win off the last ball, the seniors again badly let the team down and although Johnson, only in the side due to a finger injury to Royston Crandon, battled bravely for his 28-ball 25 the soft demise of Shiv Chanderpaul (18) at 39-5 was really the beginning of the end for the Guyanese without a Regional One-Day title in five years.
Ramdeen, in his 2nd match at this level edged Best to slip in the first over while Fudadin, in the team due to Chris Barnwell’s hamstring injury, played around a full length ball and had his stumps scattered. Persisted with despite his string of recent low scores for Guyana, Deonarine was magnificently caught behind by Carlo Morris down the leg side for a first ball duck as he gloved a quick short ball and Guyana had sunk to 3-2.
On a day in which it was announced that he was not selected for next month’s West Indies tour to Sri Lanka, Sarwan was well taken at third man off Best to leave the score on 6-4.
Chanderpaul and Johnson took the score to 39 before they were both removed by Hinds after left-arm spinner Suleiman Benn (2-19) had bowled Jacobs (11) behind his back as he missed a sweep shot.
Anthony Bramble who looked ragged behind the stumps against showed he had some batting ability with an unbeaten 11 to follow up his valuable 30 in the first match but Crandon (6), Bishoo (9) and Keon Joseph (4) all fell in quick succession as the handful of spectators watched as Barbados completed victory with more than half of the overs remaining.
Earlier, Braithwaite was dropped at leg gully by Jacobs and by Joseph at fine-leg in Crandon’s 2nd over after he was struck on his helmet by the pacer. Joseph began well but Richards pulled him and straight drove him for boundaries and a hooked boundary and a savage off drive for 4 by Hinds in his 4th over forced Sarwan to take him off as the Bajans settled in.
Richards smashed Crandon to the cover boundary to post the 50 off 51 balls before Jacobs and Fudadin put the brakes on the scoring. A couple of leg before decisions went Barbados’ way as both Hinds, Richards and Carter all looked fortunate to have survived but the Guyanese offered little support to their bowlers.
A tired looking Hinds was bowled by Fudadin at 116-2 and Bishoo had Richards caught behind 4 runs later before Carter (dropped first ball off Bishoo) and Edwards, who steered a Bishoo no-ball to slip when on 2, played some attractive shots in their century partnership.
Once Carter who lofted Bishoo for six to post the 100 partnership after pulling the leg-spinner for six and hitting Deonarine over the sightscreen, departed at 221-4 Bishoo sliced through the order like a hot knife through butter and only Benn (12*) of the remaining batsmen reached double figures.
Dwayne Smith’s (1) stumps were knocked out by Crandon at 224-5 and Bishoo got rid of Edwards, Kevin Stoute (0), Morris (4) and Best (2) before Deonarine wrapped up the innings be getting rid of Kemar Roach.
With the need to factor in rain into the equation and Barnwell and Royston Crandon still injured, Guyana will need to regroup as quickly as possible to ensure they win tomorrow to qualify for Thursday’s first semi-final in Kingston.
