Buxtonians and other football buffs were treated to an exciting night of football when action in the 3rd Annual Mackeson/Digicel Sweet Sixteen football tournament continued at the Buxton Community Centre Ground on Friday evening.
In the first match of the night Winners Connection lived up to their name and needled Cougars FC to advance to the next stage while in the feature attraction, BVTUFC failed to match the ‘Flamingoes’ in flight and surrendered their game 3-1.
Forward mid fielder, Rawle Gittens made the difference for Winners Connection when he collected a dolly of a pass from Marvis Fraser on the right flank in the 46th minute, pivoted and kicked the ball past the Cougars’ custodian that triggered celebrations from the Winners Connection squad long before the ball settled at the back of the net. Despite spirited attacks, Cougars failed to equalize the situation and that success remained decisive.
The game between Flamingoes and BVTUFC started at a hectic pace with both teams attacking furiously. Merely seven minutes into the match, the players became embroiled in a goal scrimmage at the mouth of the BVTUFC goal. It was easy pickings for the Flamingo lads but inexplicably they managed to flunk the chance. They were made to pay for the blunder six minutes later when Kevin Williams raced down the left wing and planted the ball past their goalkeeper to send BVTUFC ahead.
Shem Porter then made amends when his shot from the right wing left the goalie grasping at thin air before settling at the back of the net. Thereafter, there were vicious exchanges as each team tried to seize the initiative. With no further successes in the first half, both teams went in to regroup.
Scarcely had the whistle to start the second half sounded when the hard working Flamingo striker collected a pass and raced to the opposition’s goal. The BVTUFC strikers advanced forcing him to take a premature shot at the goal causing the ball to sail over the uprights.
The BV striker Reon Hopkinson was the closest at breaking the deadlock when he slammed a left foot shot that flew towards the Flamingo goal. Only this time the ‘keeper’ was vigilant enough to tip the ball over the uprights.
The battle continued with both teams engaged in furious exchanges. It was Sheldon Gurrick who broke the deadlock with a pinpoint strike that cleared opposition’s defence and flew past their custodian.
The goal seemed to inspire the Flamingo and more particularly Gurrick whose second attempt several minutes later, in the 78th cannoned to the back of the opposition’s goal. Even then, the Flamingoes refused to be complacent and might have widened the margin but for an athletic save by the BVTUFC custodian seconds before the referee’s whistle sealed the issue.
Activities continued last night with another exciting double header at the Plaisance Community Centre Ground.
