Dominican Republic eclipsed Guyana’s record

In last Saturday’s Edition Of the Kaieteur News Sports section, headline CONCACAF records broken in Digicel Cup, Dominican Republic set a new all time record with a stunning win, humiliating the British Virgin Islands,17 nil.
Also reported in the same article, that St Lucia’s 14-1 thrashing of the US Virgin Islands on April 14 in the old Caribbean Cup, is the closet results in the CONCACAF region achieved to the Dominican Republic’s record breaking performance against the British Virgin Islands.
For the records, Guyana led by Jermaine Smartt defeated Anguilla 14 nil at the Antigua Recreation Ground in 1998 April. Collie- Hitman – Hercules led the assault with a clinical helmet-trick (4 goals). Omali Nassy and Jermaine Scott scored a hat-trick each, Randolph Jerome scored a double while Shawn Wong and Wayne Milo finished with a goal each.
That victory bettered the 14-1 results Grenada had inflicted on Anguilla in the opening round in Group A of the same tournament.
Earlier in the Group A round, Guyana drew 2 all with host Antigua and Barbuda.  Goal scorers for Guyana were Collie Hercules in the 26th minute and Omali Nassy on international debut in the 70th minute, Derek ‘Pretty Boy’ Edwards scored a double for Antigua and Barbuda.
Guyana then lost 2-1 to Grenada; goal scores for the Spice Isle were Jason Roberts in the 20th minute and Claire Alexander in the 36th minute, while Randolph Jerome scored his first international goal for Guyana in a losing cause.

So St. Lucia’s 14-1, triumph over the US Virgin Islands on the April 14, 2001 was not the best performance in the CONCACAF Region. The Guyana 14-nil destruction of Anguilla at the Antigua Recreation Ground in St. Johns in 1998 in the Shell Caribbean Cup Tournament bettered that.
