The 2010 Banks Light Beer 3-Day Inter-zone First Division Cricket Tournament was officially launched on Friday at the Port Mourant Community Centre Ground. The launching took place during the second round match between Lower Corentyne and New Amsterdam/Canje.
Public Relations Officer/Communication Manager of Banks DIH Ltd Mr. Troy Peters at the launching stated that his company was pleased to be associated with the tournament and Berbice Cricket as the ancient county has a rich heritage of producing outstanding players like Roy Fredericks, Alvin Kallicharran, Rohan Kanhai and Basil Butcher. Banks DIH Ltd, Peters stated, saw this competition as helping to foster the development of cricket in Berbice and by extension Guyana. Like cricket in Berbice, the company has been a main stay of manufacturing the best in Guyana and has always showed its appreciation to the development of sports in Guyana. He pledged Banks DIH Ltd continued support for Berbice Cricket.
Public Relations Officer of the Berbice Cricket Board Hilbert Foster in welcoming the delegation from Banks DIH Ltd stated that the Berbice Cricket Board recognised that the true talent of any player would be revealed in the longer version of the game. The aim of the three day inter-zone, the PRO stated was to prepare Berbice players for the upcoming four days Inter-county tournament and also to get young players to play the longer version. He urged the members of both teams to play the game in the correct spirit and to give of their best.
President of the Berbice Cricket Board Keith Foster hailed the Inter-zone Tournament as a red letter day for Berbice as it was the first ever to be held in the ancient county. Noting the importance of the tournament, the President called on the batsmen to be disciplined and to learn to bat long to get big scores.
He disclosed that the Berbice Cricket Board was organising cricket at all levels at both the Inter-club and Inter-zone levels and this was assisting the county’s players to develop at a rapid rate and to dominate the game at the inter-county level.
Foster expressed gratitude to the beverage giants and thanked Mr. Carlton Joao, Mr. George Mc Donald and Mr. Brian Choo-Hen for the part they played in the Berbice Cricket Board obtaining the sponsorship.
He pledged that the tournament would be well organised, all funds would be properly used and that the standard of play would be very high.
At the end of the launching ceremony the sponsorship cheque of $800, 000 was handed over along with the Winner and Runner up Trophies to the Board. Among those present at the launching were Banks DIH Ltd, Berbice manager Reginald Matthews and Brand Manager Ian De Barros.
