The Barbados Auto Racing League (BARL) has named their team of drivers and one rider to represent Barbados at the 2010 Round 3 Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) which is slated for November 7, at the South Dakota Circuit.
Team Manager and Club Secretary, Kurt Seabra said that the Club was satisfied that they were fielding the best possible team based on the availability of competitors and their machines. “It is common knowledge that whenever we tour, we like to see Barbados represented in every Group, and I am very happy to report that this year we have once again gotten good support from the drivers, making it arguably the strongest team we have put together in quite some time. I am confident that we will put on a fantastic show for the Guyanese motor racing fans”.
The team’s CMRC competitors will be spearheaded by the two drivers who have already scored Class wins in the Series this year, Mark Maloney and Roger Mayers. Maloney had an uncharacteristically disappointing Round 2 event at Bushy Park, but heads into Guyana with a completely revamped suspension on his F1 sounding Mazda RX3 in 5th place overall and the leading points scorer for Barbados.
Mayers who holds lap records at South Dakota and Bushy Park will be hoping that His Ford Focus can repeat the form displayed on debut last year when he set the track record and only a broken driveshaft in the final race prevented him from making a clean sweep of race wins on the day.
BARL 2010 Group 4B Champion, Doug Maloney and Stuart Williams complete the team’s CMRC entries.
The veteran Maloney will be looking to improve on his consistent string of 4th place Class finishes with the Audi Quattro at Round 2. No stranger to South Dakota, Williams has put his ‘silver bullet’ Toyota Starlet on the back burner and will debut his 2WD record setting turbocharged Lotus Elise.
Barbados currently sits at the bottom of the Overall Team Points table, however Seabra is quietly optimistic that the team can improve on this position if all the cars perform to their true potential.
Steve King in the turbocharged Nissan Skyline fresh from winning BARL’s 2010 Group 3C Championship will be moving up to Group 4 to compete against the likes of Ryan Rahaman. Now on his third tour to Guyana, King will be hoping that the recent reliability form shown by the Skyline will carry on to South Dakota.
BARL 2010 Group 3A Champion, Kurt Thompson will be looking to repeat his success of 2009 when two wins and a second place saw him win Group 2B at South Dakota.
Cashing in on the container space created by the absence of Barry Mayers, Shawn Boxhill will be Barbados second entry for Group 2B. Boxhill will make his return to South Dakota after a two year hiatus driving the turbocharged Suzuki Swift GTi campaigned by Colin Reid during 2010.
The Seaboard Marine Group 2A will see a quartet of Toyota Starlets from Barbados.
2009 Group winner and South Dakota veteran, Kenrick Husbands will lead the charge supported once again by Mark Thompson.
Joining these two will be BARL’s Group 2C and overall Champion Driver, Edward Corbin and their Group 2B Champion Jason Harewood, both of whom will be on debut at South Dakota. Corbin currently leads the 2010 Seaboard Marine Group 2A points standings with Husbands second and Jad Rahaman of Guyana third.
Barbados lone motorcycle entry will be Brook Miller. On this his third trip to South Dakota, Miller will be astride the Suzuki GSXR 600 ridden by countryman Dexter Small during BARL’s 2010 Championship.
