50 single-parents are to be trained as caterers, garment constructors

The Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security has offered training programmes to an additional 50 single-parents, as part of the ongoing National Training Project (N.T.P). These persons will be trained for a period of four months, in areas such as catering and garment construction.
Chief Executive Officer/Secretary National Industrial Training, Alana Brassington, on Thursday, told Kaieteur News that the programme, which commenced in 2009, has trained and graduated 472 single-parents to date, in seven occupational areas.
According to Brassington, these trainees are provided with a stipend of $4000 per month and NIS coverage. She added that they are also provided with the basic tools and safety gear if required.
Brassington noted that these programmes offered, are not apprenticeship projects. She indicated that business entities are asked to train these individuals on the job and provide the Ministry with the evaluation of their performances.
The Ministry of Labour also funds the National Training Project for Youth Empowerment (NTPYE) which was launched in 2005. The aim of this project is to provide technical and vocational education and training to school dropouts.
The programme consists of on the job training and exposure to life skills educational classes. The persons, who are targeted, are between the ages of 15 and 30.
To date, 1863 trainees have graduated in over 60 occupational areas.
