‘Golden Jaguars’ battle old rivals Suriname today in final game

Old rivals Guyana and Suriname will go head to head in the final clash of Group C of the Digicel Caribbean Cup (DCC) today at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium, Paramaribo Suriname which will bring the curtain down on what has been an exciting round of competition.
While both Guyana and Suriname have been the only two countries to record wins; defeating St. Lucia and the Netherlands Antilles respectively, the Suriname Football Federation has also done well on debut as a host of the DCC.
On the field of play, the battle lines will be drawn between two nations that have a rich tradition when it comes to football, the home team has been dominant over the years but that trend has been changing with the Guyanese coming into their own in recent times.
When the two countries clashed last November in the Suriname Independence Cup, a young Guyana side prevailed over the home team which featured a number of their seasoned players and this time around with the return of more experienced Guyanese players, an exciting climax to the this group is anticipated.
Head Coach of the ‘Golden Jaguars’ Wayne Dover said he is looking forward to the challenge of winning the group outright here in Suriname.
Miami based midfield player Sean Cameron will have to sit out the game after attracting yellow cards in the two previous matches but his absence will not affect the focus of the Guyana team according to Dover.
“We are here to do a job for our country and the GFF and that focus will not change. Challenges will come along the way and we will have to deal with them and in this case with Cameron being out we have a back up plan to remedy the situation.”
Expected back in the line up is former Captain and central defender Charles Pollard who played well in the first game against St. Lucia but had to make way for Vice Captain John Rodrigues.
With Cameron being out, Rodrigues is expected to fill that position in midfield and Pollard will take up the position in defence.
No other changes are likely for the starting eleven with Ronson Williams in goal; defenders – Howard Lowe (Captain), Jake Newton, Charles Pollard and Christopher Nurse; midfield – Dwain Jacobs, Dwayne Ali, John Rodrigues and Walter Moore, Dwight Peters and Anthony Abrams will hunt for goals up front.
Finishing continues to be a challenge for the Jaguars and Dover is hoping that his forwards will step it up against the Suriname who will be tough to beat on home soil but not invincible.
Suriname rested their number one goalkeeper Roany Aloema for their game against St. Lucia but he is expected to be back for today’s clash. Experienced defender Marlon Felter who is the Vice Captain of the team, Captain Derrick Garden along with midfielder and playmaker Emelio Limon, who was one of the eight players that went to Sunderland AFC Academy as part of the Digicel Kick Start Clinics in 2008, will be key players for the home team in their quest to win.
Spectators including dozens of Guyanese who have travelled to Suriname for the game can anticipate an exciting game.
Suriname’s Coach Ricardo Winter in an invited comment after the St. Lucia game said that he was impressed to see that Guyana has so many technical players and was looking forward to the challenge.
“Against Guyana, we will have to control the ball and keep possession, whenever we get the opening to score we will have to. I also believe that the team to score first will win the game.”
Kick off time this afternoon in the first game between St. Lucia and the Netherlands Antilles is 17:00hrs Suriname time; 16:00hrs Guyana time.
These two teams have both lost their respective matches to Guyana and Suriname and will be seeking to leave here with a win under their belt.
