– Spouse placed on bond for hitting man with mop stick
Arshad Kadir, 51, of Chesney Squatting Area, Corentyne, who told the court that he is a cane cutter, was yesterday sentenced to three months in jail by Magistrate Tajenarine Ramroop, after he pleaded guilty to a charge of assault causing actual bodily harm to his 47-year-old wife, Bibi Taira Kadir, on September 4, last, at their home.
Magistrate Ramroop, sitting at the Albion Magistrate’s Court, placed the man’s wife on a six-month bond for assaulting her husband.
Prosecutor Inspector Satrohan Dayaram told the court that the two had an argument at their home over the fact that Arshad Kadir would prefer drinking rum instead of going to work. Bibi Kadir related to the court that her husband, “nah go ah work, all he ah do is drink rum whole day’. Me ask him how we guh eat and he ah behave bad”.
The court was told that the accused became annoyed and picked up a paling stave with which he dealt his wife several lashes across the body.
The matter was reported to the Albion Police Station and the defendant was arrested and charged. In court, the man begged the magistrate for a chance and blamed the entire scenario on his drinking and frustration.
He however told the court that it is his wife who beats him. He said that on the day in question, she hit him with a mop stick and he in turn just “rough her up” with his hands. He denied ever using any paling stave.
Magistrate Ramroop then enquired why the wife was not charged – if the man’s allegations were true.
Bibi Kadir was subsequently charged and placed on six months bond.
The magistrate, in his remarks, said that on many occasions both the husband and wife are guilty of assaulting each other, but the husbands are afraid in most instances to come forward. He admonished the police to conduct proper investigations. He then sentenced Arshad Kadir.
