Following victory in their opening game by a 1-0 margin against St. Lucia ranked 186 in the world, Guyana’s ‘Golden Jaguars’ will be out seeking their second win in as many matches when they tangle with the Netherlands Antilles (ranked 166 in the world) at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium from 19:00hrs Suriname time, 18:00hrs Guyana time.
Guyana, ranked the highest in the group, 120 in the world to Suriname’s 137, did not perform to the best of their ability according to Head Coach Wayne Dover in their match up against St. Lucia even though they enjoyed far better ball possession and created many chances. Finishing continues to be a major problem and is being addressed by the Technical staff. Yesterday, the team held a pool session in the morning and a short session at the Essed Field in the afternoon where they focused on finishing for the most part.
The defence seems to be covered as well as the midfield to a great extent but the forwards needs to step it up a few notches against the Netherlands Antilles who almost shared the points with Suriname whom they lost to 2-1.
Suriname had taken the lead in the 37th minute through Ives Vlijter; Netherlands
equalized in the 81st minute when second half substitute Lacey Pauletta banged the nets only to give up a penalty in the first of three minutes of added on time, goalkeeper Rony Aloema took the shot and scored against his opposite number Marcello Pisas who is also captain of the team.
Guyana will not be hoping for such a situation and will have to score their chances when they are created.
Miami FC player John Rodrigues (Vice Captain) who joined the team late on Wednesday warmed up but did not feature in the game is expected to be included in today’s starting eleven. Former Captain Charles Pollard made a grand return to the national grid and in tandem with twin partner and current Captain Howard Lowe did well for Guyana at the back along with Jake Newton and Chris Bourne – who continues to impress with his ability to overlap and his high level of fitness backed up with his ability to use both feet.
Pollard’s performance though, was not enough to hold down a place in the starting eleven.
He makes way for John Rodrigues with Dwight Peters and Dwayne Ali also coming into the starting line-up. Devon Millington and Shawn Beveney are the other players dropped.
With Puerto Rico and St. Kitts & Nevis already through the second round as respective Group winners, Guyana will he aiming for full points against the Netherlands Antilles to secure a place in the next round before going for a win against the home team in their final game on Sunday which will seal the group triumph.
St. Vincent & the Grenadines had to settle for the runner up spot in Group B to St. Kitts as a tie breaker system decided the winner of the group after three countries ended on 5 points each.
The Cayman Islands (4 points) placed second in Group A to winners Puerto Rico (9 points) and are awaiting the outcome of this group to decide the best second place team to go through.
The challenge of the Netherlands should not be a problem for the ‘Golden Jaguars’ to conqueror but they need to improve a great deal on their finishing.
Staring X1: Ronson Williams, Howard Lowe, John Rodrigues, Jake Newton, Chris Bourne, Dwayne Ali, Walter Moore, Dwayne Jacobs, Sean Cameron, Anthony Abrams and Dwight Peters.
