Dear Editor,
Can the government of Guyana look at the drainage problem in Prashad Nagar and Bel Air since the mayor and city council is not maintaining it. The drains are heavily silted and is a disaster waiting to happen.
Those residents of the two communities who raised the level of their parapets to an exceptionally high level with sand must be fined. This also contributes to the problem since the rain and run-off rain water washes sand into the drains. It has to be addressed urgently or will turn into a disaster.
The water pressure and the quality of water in the above two neighborhoods are also extremely poor. These areas are part of the Greater Georgetown. Why can’t the Guyana Water Inc. provide quality service to these neighbourhoods?
Why is the government spending billions on a canal when all that was necessary was to channel the excess conservancy water into existing rivers and creeks such as the Abary and the Mahaica in a controlled flow?
The money should instead be spent on much needed maintenance of the capital’s drainage and water supply.
