Sports Ministry’s E’bo Day of Interaction a success

Hundreds of youths participated in a highly successful Day of Interaction last Sunday at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground on the Essequibo Coast. The event was organized by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport / National Sports Commission and the Regional Administration of Region # 2.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony took the salute at the march-past after which Regional Chairman Ally Baksh expressed satisfaction with the day’s activity while Director of Sport Neil Kumar outlined the purpose of the event. Anthony also outlined the Ministry’s programme for sports throughout the country and encouraged schools and communities to take sports seriously since a Sports award will be given to the best school and community.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Alfred King advised the young people to remain focused and encouraged them to use sports for positive development. Ganga Persaud, Chairman of the Public Service Commission and several Regional Officials were also present.
Athletes participated in Football, Domino, Softball Cricket (male and female), Table Tennis, Circle Tennis, Draughts, Volleyball and Basketball and the events were keenly contested.
Results:-
Table Tennis (Junior) Eighteen players were involved in this category with Kushan Balgobin of Anna Regina taking the first spot ahead of Taraque Deonarine of Windsor Castle.
Table Tennis (Senior)
Twelve persons participated with 70-year-old Randolph Shepherd being the oldest competitor. Nathan Persaud of Bush Lot beat Kushan Balgobin into second place.
Volleyball
Eight teams participated and Mainstay defeated Danielstown in the final.
Softball Cricket (female)
Capoey with forty-eight runs defeated Tapakuma by 10 runs in the final.
Softball Cricket (male)
Twenty-three teams participated and Richmond defeated Perseverance by six wickets in the final.
Circle Tennis
Three teams entered the competition and New Opportunity Corps, who scored 95 runs defeated Capoey (69 runs) in the final.
Domino
In the final, defending champions the Guyana Defence Force battled the Guyana Fire Service and Windsor Castle. The Guyana Fire Service won the competition with 51 points while the Guyana Defence Force had to settle for the second position with 50 points.
Football
Of the six teams took part and the Guyana Defence Force outplayed Henrietta to win 2-nil in the final.
Basketball
After getting past their opponents in the preliminary rounds, Henrietta defeated Suddie in the final by 34 points to 30.
Draughts
Thirteen participants including four females took to the boards before Jumal Munroe and Colin Harry, both of NOC, occupied the first and second positions respectively.
Trophies were presented to winners and runners up in each disciplines Individuals and clubs also received awards.
In the march-past NOC won the prize for the largest contingent, Charity Progressive Youth won the ‘best banner’ prize while Lake Capoey won the best uniformed group award.
