Guyana ‘s ‘Golden Jaguars’ opened their quest for the top spot in Group C of the Digicel Caribbean Cup 2010 with a 1-0 win over St. Lucia at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium, Paramaribo, Suriname, last night.
The Guyanese looked a compact unit as they showed lots of patience and did well in maintaining possession for long periods; the St. Lucian’s were very contented to play the waiting game and were very cautious in pushing forward.
It did not take too long for Guyana to take the lead in a game that they were in control of. Pushing forward, they won a free kick about 5 meters outside the box in the 9th minute; the efficient left back Christopher Bourne was summoned to take the shot which he clinically dispatched into the back of the nets with a well taken left foot shot; St. Lucia’s custodian Iran Cassius never in with a chance of denying the Guyanese.
The possession game by the Jaguars continued and when ever St. Lucia had the chance to press forward they tested their legs with a few shots to goal.
The experience of the Guyanese defenders; Captain Howard Lowe, Charles Pollard, Jake Newton and Bourne nullified the St. Lucia strike duo.
Devon Millington, one of two strikers the Guyanese started with, had the chance to bag the ball past Cassius in the 29th minute but his shot was a tame one. St. Lucia won a rare free kick in the 31st minute but Ronson Williams in goal for Guyana had no problems in saving. As Guyana continued to push forward, opportunities came along but they were not able to convert. The first corner of the match was won by Guyana in the 35th minute. A commanding display of possession ball in the first half by Guyana but just a solitary goal resulting.
St. Lucia came out in the final half with more purpose and created some chances but they were not threatening as the Guyanese defence continued to hold their own. Dwain Jacobs had the chance to double the lead in the 60th minute but his shot was deflected for a corner.
The energetic Bourne pushed forward in the 68th minute and almost scored his second but his shot was again deflected for another corner as Cassius continued to deny the Guyanese.
Anthony Abrams joined the fray soon after when his shot too was parried away for yet another corner.
Dwain Jacobs’ free kick destined for goal number two was tipped over the bar by the acrobatic Cassius and Bourne with another free kick suffered the same fate as the Jaguars continued to pepper Cassius with shots.
In the final 5 minutes, Walter Moore’s header went straight to the keeper who again tipped over the bar. St. Lucia’s best chance of the game was created in the 87th minute but the shot was a weak one that Williams saved easily.
The final whistle went soon after and Guyana collected full points from their opening game, St. Lucia will have to regroup for their second game against Suriname on Friday evening at the same venue with Guyana taking on the Netherlands Antilles.
Meanwhile, in the earlier game host Suriname defeated the Netherlands Antilles 2 goals to 1, the deciding strike and injury time penalty.
