Leading Guyanese female international football referee, Dianne Ferreira-James is due to resume international official duties after sufficiently recovering from a Hamstring injury she had suffered.
Ferreira-James indicated that she is very happy, firstly despite being around 70% healed of the injury, she passed the FIFA Fitness Test on Sunday October 9 in Nassau, Bahamas where she is now based, at the MA Course held October 7-11. The course was conducted by Peter Prendergast (FIFA Technical Instructor) and Ramesh Ramdan (Regional Development Officer).
Due to injuries and ill health she was forced out of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in July after not being able to finish the Fitness Test and again on a second attempt in Guyana on September 11. She explained that the wet and slippery conditions further injured her left hamstring.
She explained, “I visited 2 doctors and finally progress in my healing process. I take therapy 3 days per week and rested it 2 weeks before Sunday’s run. It’s about 70-75% healed and another 2 weeks before the Gold Cup I should be fine.”
The outstanding football official, who has officiated in several World Cups and international tournaments along with local matches, informed that her main goal is making the 2011 FIFA WWC Germany and end her career there if possible.
“I have another 5 years of refereeing but not sure my body can take that much years of hard training. I have accomplished all goals set and attended every FIFA Tournament (except U-17 a new addition) and all Concacaf and CFU. I can bow out knowing I have made a significant contribution in my 12 years as a top class referee. I am sure Concacaf awaits my retirement knowing my experience and knowledge will be theirs to utilize. I will finish my Associates Degree in Business Administration at the end of 2011 but will continue for my Bachelor’s switching to Sports Management/Administration,” she informed.
Ferreira-James continued, “After refereeing my attention will be on instructing the younger referees, giving my time, energy and knowledge for the continued development of the Referees Department. I am also attending the Concacaf Elite Referees Course in Cancun Mexico from October 23-26 and the Tournament from October 28 – November 8. I have had a good run for this year with three major appointments in Concacaf U-20 Guatemala, Concacaf U-17 Costa Rica and FIFA U-20 Germany and now Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup.
“I will be home for Kashif and Shanghai 2010-2011 Tournament. I miss my homeland and my refereeing friends and family.”
Ferreira-James, who has had to cope with personal tragedy when her father died in 2008 at the hands of marauding bandits in Bartica, noted that she is still affected by those events because her mother has not been the same.
Unfulfilled promises by governmental officials have also left her and family disappointed two years on.
