Guyana’s Honorary Consulate to Toronto Danny Doobay has announced his resignation to return to the private sector.
Doobay, in a letter to some associates and seen by Kaieteur News, said that he would be returning to the private sector “to pursue some other interests, in addition to spending time with my family.”
He served 12 years as the head of Guyana’s mission in Toronto. Doobay is expected to announce his resignation today. He was appointed to the position in October 1998.
Before this, he worked as the General Manager of the Guyana Television Corporation (GTV), which is now the National Communications Network. Prior to his appointment at GTV, he worked in Toronto with Tomahdia Associates, as the Vice-President for Marketing and Design.
“I feel very privileged to have been given the opportunity to serve my community and country as the Honorary Consul General in Toronto. Over those years, I have had the pleasure of witnessing the coming together of our rainbow communities in unparallel ways,” he said in the letter.
Over the last five years, Doobay said that he has seen a greater willingness among Guyanese nationals to contribute to the development of Guyana, an increased readiness to visit with Guyana, “along with a growing desire to invest.”
In Toronto, he said such enthusiasm found expressions in programmes such as the Guyana Festival, Guyana Awards, Last Lap Lime, the Guyana Burns Care Unit (at the Georgetown Hospital), and School Net Guyana, to name a few.
“I leave the Consulate in Toronto feeling that I have contributed, in some small way, to the development of a stronger, more patriotic Diaspora community, one that is more aware of the path of development charted by our government and of its expected role in that process,” Doobay stated.
He said he continues to believe that the more than one million nationals living in the Diaspora represent a large and relatively untapped potential – nationals who would like in their own small, but meaningful way, to contribute to the development of Guyana.
“I have encouraged our government and colleagues to pursue this goal, vehemently,” he stated. Doobay said that he hopes to continue with the Schoolnet Guyana programme to bring technology into the classrooms of schools across Guyana.
