Guyana were among three teams which arrived here just after noon yesterday on a Caribbean Airlines flight for their engagement in the Regional One-Day cricket series which concludes on October 24 with the final at Sabina Park.
Manager Carl Moore, Coach Ravindra Seeram and 13 for the 14 players selected to try and give Guyana its 10th title at this level and first since 2005, traveled from Guyana yesterday.
Skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan who missed the Inter-County final last Saturday at the Guyana National Stadium due to personal commitments in North America joined the team at their Kingston Hotel yesterday after journeying from the USA.
Guyana’s Video Analyst Robin Singh was already in Jamaica to participate in a West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) hosted Video Analyst seminar while former Guyana Test pacers Reon King and Colin Stuart are also here attending a Match-Referees seminar on the same programme.
The Guyana squad which departed the city at 02:00hrs yesterday morning arrived in the Caribbean’s largest English Speaking Island a tired bunch after stopping in Trinidad, Barbados and St Maarten before touching down at the Norman Manley International Airport at 12:35hrs Jamaica time.
Manager Carl Moore said the team was confident of doing well in the 8-team competition and should have their first practice session today.
“We did not do well in South Africa but the trip should have been a learning experience for those who played in the Champions League in this team while the return of Shivnarine Chanderpaul is a big boost to our changes since he is a proven top-class batsman,” Moore said yesterday.
Guyana face the High Performance Centre (HPC) team in their opening match tomorrow in Kingston while rain, which has hit the Caribbean’s most Northern Island hard in the past few days, could be a major concern for the two first round games today.
Already the two games set for Chedwin Park in rural Jamaica had to be switched to the City because of the condition of the ground due to the weather and while the sun was out for most of yesterday, Jamaica was again hit by a hard shower yesterday afternoon.
The HPC team, made up of the most promising youngsters in the region, including Guyana’s trio of Veerasammy Permaul, Brendon Bess and Rajendra Chandrika, traveled on the same flight with the South Americans yesterday as did the Barbados team.
Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) is the
other non-territorial side in the competition and begin their campaign against two-times defending champions Trinidad and Tobago today in Kingston while in zone ‘B’ host Jamaica face-off with the Leeward Islands at the new Trelawny Stadium.
Both opening round matches commence at 09:30hrs (10:30hrs Guyana time) and live radio commentary will be broadcast on the Jamaica game.
