The GLTA’s most anticipated Junior Tournament serves off on Saturday, October 16 from 8:00am and will run for three weekends October 16 and 17, 23 and 24 and the 30th and 31st.
Marketing Executive of Nigel’s Supermarket Ms Nicole Waldron expressed the commitment of Nigel’s Supermarket to Junior Tennis development in Guyana. Since 2004 the Nigel’s Supermarket Junior Classic Tournament has been an annual feature on the Tennis Calendar. She emphasised that this year’s tournament coincides with the 25th Anniversary of Nigel’s Supermarket.
GLTA Chairperson for Junior Development Grace McCalman congratulated Nigel’s Supermarket on its 25th Anniversary and was happy to have the GLTA celebrate this great achievement with the organization. She noted that Nigel’s was the first sponsor of National Junior Tournament in 2004 when the Tennis Association was re-established and it has aided with the development of many of the leading Junior players.
The tournament which usually attracts all of the advanced junior players will now include the U-10 categories of mini-tennis for Boys and Girls to cater for the youngest grassroots players in the Primary School’s Tennis Initiative Programme.
The tournament features 9 categories:
Boys and Girls U-18
Boys and Girls U-14
Boys and Girls U-12
Boys and Girls U-10 mini-tennis
Junior Mixed Doubles
Matches will be played on the weekends from 8:00am – 3:00pm at the Pegasus Hotel Tennis Courts. Players will play round-robin matches in the preliminary round with the top two players from each group advancing to the elimination stages.
As usual, a high standard of competition is expected especially in the Boys U-14s where top players Gavin Lewis, Daniel Lopes, Benedict Sukra and Khalid Gobin will compete at that level for the last time. In the Girls U-18s Shawna Gentle, Krystal Sukra, Aruna Ramrattan will also battle it out for the top spot.
Players are encouraged to sign up before the October 13 deadline.
