Less than two weeks after head of Holland’s Enterprise Promotions (HEP) Carwyn Holland unveiled plans for a mega boxing event at the Princess Hotel, Providence on October 6, one of the principals, Rawle Frank, has vehemently denied acquiescing to fight Kwesi ‘Assasin’ Jones in one of the preliminary bouts.
Holland had reported that Frank would have faced off with Jones in a 6 rounds middleweight scrap in a card that is supposed to feature such local fighters as Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil and Shondell ‘Mystery Lady’ Alfred opposing overseas opponents.
Kaieteur Sport caught up with Frank early yesterday morning as he went through his drills at the Jackie Gleason’s Boxing gym, Brooklyn NY.
The veteran boxer vehemently stated that the fight was a development he knew nothing about. “I had a verbal agreement with Holland to fight Denny Dalton on November 6 last but negotiations fell through,’ said Frank. He said he has not spoken with Holland since. “Now I heard that I am fighting Kwesi Jones in a card soon, I do not have a contract to fight Jones nor had I engaged in talks with Holland,” Frank emphatically stated.
Kaieteur Sport contacted Holland for a comment on the issue yesterday morning. He said that he was in a meeting and was unable to engage in any discussions.
Pressed for a comment he tersely advised that Frank speak with Elton Prospere, Gwendolyn O’Neil’s manager who lives in the USA. He said that he (Prospere) had been the intermediary for the bout.
“My discussion with Elton (Prospere) centered on a bout with Denny Dalton. At no time did the name Kwesi Jones pop up,” Frank maintained in response to Holland’s claims. He said that he has been preparing for a bout with Dalton until negotiations fell through. “I have no interest in fighting Jones; he only has 6 fights and I am interested in bigger things right now. I am prepared to fight Dalton since he is a more attractive prospect than Jones,” Frank maintains.
When informed that the promoter had already made a public announcement about the bout Frank reneged on his earlier statements. “If I step into the ring now against Jones it has to be worth the while. If the fight is for the local middleweight title then I can reconsider my options,” stated Frank.
Frank is an experienced pugilist with years of experience in the fistic sport. He has fought twice and lost both times for the world title against the late Vernon Forrest.
Yesterday Frank said that he believes that there is still a lot of fight left in him and he still nurtures the ambition of winning a world title before he calls it a day.
“I think that I have about 2 more years in the sport. I am still in good shape and would be more than happy if I should get another shot at the world title,” he said.
