Several 21-inch Television sets, Microwaves and DVD Players were presented by sponsors Queensway on Sunday at the DCC ground to outstanding performers in the Haier Cup 2nd division 40-over cricket competition organized by the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA).
The unprecedented number of quality prizes provided by the sponsors, whose business entity is located on Regent Street in the city, must have been a huge motivator for the cricketers to produce sterling performances throughout the wonderfully run competition.
DVD Players were also presented to Umpires and media workers who contributed to the success of the competition which was won by GNIC who beat hosts DCC in the final.
GCA Vice-President Neil Barry, a former Guyana First-Class batsman, said the investment by the sponsors not only helped in the development of cricket in the city by affording the GCA to host a competition but should also help in the individual development of the players who could use the TV set and DVD players to watch cricket and learn something.
The players received prizes for being the top performer of each preliminary round, based on a points system for runs, wickets and catches and also for their showing in the semifinals and final. Three media houses (Kaieteur News, Stabroek News and GNNL) were commended for their coverage of the competition.
