Sham Khan registered a shock defeat over reigning junior champion Cecil Cox to amass 3 1/2 points and assume an early lead when the nation’s top junior chess players locked wits in the Sasha Cells National Junior Chess Qualifier at the Keishar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street on Sunday evening.
Despite Khan’s sterling performance, the tournament remains intricately poised going into the final two days of the competition slated for Wednesday from 17:00 hours at the Keishar’s Sports Club, before returning to the Olympic House on Saturday for the final two rounds from 10:00 am.
Ron Motilall trails Khan by 1/2 a point while Raan Motilall, Suhai Feng, Cecil Cox and Rashad Hussain are all bundled on 2 points apiece. Carlos Petterson is on 1 1/2 points with Ryan McKay, still to score a point.
Khan started the day on a successful note with a decisive victory over Carlos Petterson before his second round victory over Cox. He then defeated Ryan McKay before ending the day with a drawn encounter against Raan Motilall. Khan can count himself unlucky after being a knight up in the game against Motilall. The latter player, however, employed good tactics to hold out for the draw.
Earlier, in round one, Cecil Cox had defeated Ryan McKay; Ron and Raan Motilall played to a draw, while Suhai Feng defeated Rashad Hussain. Round two saw Rashad Hussain bouncing back from his first round loss to Suhai Feng to defeat Ryan McKay while Ron Motilall, Suhai Feng, Carlos Petterson and Raan Motilall all had drawn games. In round three Raan Motilall and Cecil Cox played to a draw shortly before Carlos Petterson and Ron Motilall defeated Suhai Feng and Rashad Hussain respectively. In round four Ron Motilall prevailed over Ryan McKay while Rashad Hussain won from Carlos Petterson. Cox played Feng while Khan opposed Raan Motilall, both games ending in draws.
The tournament is sponsored exclusively by Sasha Cells.
