Quick thinking and action by a fireman who was on site at the East La Penitence Police Station, yesterday prevented what could have been a major disaster at the Station.
Reports are that around 11:15 hours yesterday, sparks were seen coming from one of the main distribution panels inside the East La Penitence Police Station.
A fireman who was present at the time turned off the main switch that controls power to the building.
The same person alerted the Fire Service. However, by the time the fire tenders arrived, everything was under control.
Ranks at the station said that the fire tenders responded promptly but they were not needed as the lone fireman had already saved the day. This newspaper was told that the Fire Service has since recommended that the entire electrical system be re-examined.
This newspaper was told that none of the female prisoners being held at the facility at the time had to be evacuated nor was anyone injured.
Only recently, Fire Chief Marlon Gentle said most of the fires reported to them are as a result of electrical problems.
