Sixteen teams will battle for championship honours when the 3rd Annual Mackeson/Digicel Sweet Sixteen football tournament gets underway at several venues along the East Coast corridor from tomorrow, October 13 to 31.
To this effect, administrators of the two corporate bodies convened at the Ansa McAl, Industrial site, Beterverwagting offices to officially launch the tournament and hand over the sponsorship packages to the organizers.
Activities get underway at the Plaisance Community Centre Ground tomorrow evening from 18:00hrs when New Amsterdam FC tackle Santos FC, while Golden Stars take on Uitvlugt from 20:00hrs. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dr. Frank Anthony will meet the players and perform the traditional kick off to start the proceedings.
Two days later, on October 15, Winners Connection FC play Cougars FC from 18:00hrs shortly before BVTUFC opposes Flamingo FC. These two matches would be contested on the Buxton Community Centre Ground.
Mahaica FC get into action on October 17 when they oppose Fruta Conquerors while Riddim Squad play Ann’s Grove FC from 20:00hrs, also at the Plaisance Community Centre Ground.
Meanwhile, Marketing Director (Ansa McAl), Troy Cadogan and Public Relations and Events Manager of Digicel, Shonette Moore delivered brief remarks at the ceremony on behalf of their respective organizations.
“Digicel is happy to join in partnership with Ansa McAl under the Mackeson label in support of local footballers as they aspire to develop themselves,” said Ms Moore. She noted that the chivalry extended by her organization could be viewed as the catalyst to improvement of the footballers while providing good clean entertainment for the fans.
Mr. Cadogan reminded members of the media that his organization has been supporting the competition ever since its genesis several years ago. “Every one of these matches has been exciting and competitive because the tournament has attracted the best teams in the country,” exhorted Mr. Cadogan while explaining the reason why his company has been a permanent fixture in support of the tournament.
Meanwhile, organizer of the tournament and coordinator of the Buxton Stars Football Club, Sheron Abrams thanked the sponsors for their continued support. She further urged the public to come out in support of the matches which all promise to be action packed.
The tournament would be played on a knockout basis with the winner carting off $400,000 and a trophy while the second place finishers win $200,000 and a trophy. The teams finishing in the 3rd and 4th places win $100,000 and $75,000 respectively.
