ROSE HALL TOWN, CORENTYNE – Chairman of the Rose Hall Interim Management Committee (IMC) Bhadenauth Somrah said that the town is soon to receive street lights.
He indicated that his IMC is now in discussion with officials from the Guyana Power and Light about the installation and a payment plan.
This pilot programme would be put into effect along Independence Avenue (north and south), Tulsie Street (north and south) and the cross street by the cemetery. In the first instance 30 lamps would be installed.
Mr. Somrah indicated that this project was made possible through sound management of the IMC’s financial resources. “Even though we are collecting 35 percent in rates, we would still be able to sustain these lamps.”
He said that residents are demanding more street lights but this would not be possible unless defaulters pay up their outstanding rates. So far this year, some $5.6 million was collected and represents an improvement from the 2009 figure.
The market is said to be the biggest area of revenue collection – $15 million annually. This, the Chairman said, has been the trend since 2008.
Some vendors complain about poor service but the Chairman said this is not so. “The only problem we have is roadside vending.” He said that the market does not have the capacity to accommodate all the vendors hence the IMC made the necessary recommendations recently.
It is hoped by next year zoning would be introduced in a bid to ease the situation, “We will make a vending and no-vending zone and that would bring some control and decency to the culture the vendors practice.”
