– wins 400m bronze in historic performance
National 400m record holder, Aliann Pompey wrote her name in the annals of athletics history in Guyana yesterday when she became the only Guyanese athlete in any sport to win two medals at the blue-ribbon Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India.
Pompey, who won her first Commonwealth Games medal in Manchester, England in 2002 when she won 400m gold, returned eight years after to win a bronze medal over the same distance with an impressive time at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium.
In the process, Pompey also became the first athlete to win a medal of any kind for Guyana at the 2010 Games. Botswana’s Amantle Montsho was first in 50.10 seconds with Nigeria’s Folashade Abugan was second in 51.39 seconds. Pompey had 51.65 for third.
As part of her mental preparation for the Games, Pompey said on her internet blog that she tried to avoid all the negative press leading up to the event. She wrote that she was aware that the race may be her last at the Games and was avoiding negativity.
“I tried to stay away from all the bad press I heard about New Delhi leading up to the Commonwealth Games (CWG). I took the advice of well meaning friends with a grain of salt. For a few reasons: first being that these may be my last Commonwealth Games,” she wrote.
“I’m no longer that ‘fresh faced young lady with her life ahead of her’. In 2002, I won the 400m at the CWG in Manchester. I had my whole life ahead of me because it was my first appearance at the CWG,” she added, pointing out that she has grown older.
She said that she was able to settle in to the environment in New Delhi and focus on putting up a decent performance rather than the negatives. Pompey had told Kaieteur Sport that her retirement will not be imminent until she competes before a home crowd.
Meanwhile, boxer Dexter Jordan will hope to join Pompey’s company by securing a medal at these games. He however has a tough road ahead. Today Jordan will be in action against Kenya’s Benson Njangiru in the quarterfinals. The Forgotten Youth Foundation boxer scored a sensational first round knockout over Neo Thamahane of Lesotho in his first fight. He will hope for another dominant performance to advance further and get his grasp on the medals.
