– greater regional participation expected
Against the background of heightened marketing and regional participation, the eight edition of the South American 10km Road Race Classic was launched at the Guyana Olympic Association yesterday where details for the event was duly disclosed.
The race has been set for October 24 and will return to the Police Sports Club start and finishing points as opposed to outside the YMCA in Thomas Lands. It was also revealed that the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) will improve marketing the event.
Updating the media at Olympic House was AAG General Secretary, Claude Blackmore. He said that invitations to athletes have already gone out locally and regionally. Trinidad and Tobago is the only country to formally confirm their participation.
According to Blackmore, Trinidad will be sending five athletes to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) sanctioned road race. He said the Local Organising Committee have not yet received any formal notices of participation.
“We are meeting weekly and all systems are in place for another successful run,” Blackmore said before informing that he is certain that the challenging Brazilians will compete at the event since the Headquarters for South American athletics is in Brazil.
Asked what will be done differently to market the event that has certainly become a mega AAG calendar race, Blackmore informed that mechanisms will be used to get enthusiast out to witness the race, especially along the seawall and at the Sports Club.
In addition, he said that the race will be carried live on radio and a video will be captured to send to the IAAF. Blackmore informed that securing the roadways has been an area of major concern, but they hope to adequately address that issue this year. “We are hoping to have our roads clear for this event,” the General Secretary said, informing that Commander of ‘A’ Division, George Vyphuis has been identified to ensure that the race is minus the road and security issues it had face in previous years.
