The victorious Hikers senior men's team pose with supporters following their win over GCC in the final last Thursday evening.
Defending champions Hikers ‘A’ outclassed GCC ‘A’ in a spectacular final to maintain their title in the Banks Night Hockey Tournament which ended on Thursday evening, at the Thirst Park ground.
In the feature clash, GCC seemed the more composed side in the opening minutes of the encounter with in their typical style of lateral passes through the midfield and slow build-ups.
Hikers, however, kept themselves in the running with swift counterattacks and long through passes to their roving high strikers.
The strategy proved to be very effective on the night as Robert France beat goalkeeper Michael Xavier and full-back Philip Fernandes to a penetrating pass to ease the ball into the GCC goal in the 26th minute.
This development seemed to unsettle the usually composed GCC unit and that allowed Randy Hope to capitalise in the very next minute when he made a move to his left and hit a well placed shot past the advancing Xavier to take Hikers tally to 2 and GCC yet to score at the break.
The second half saw improved play by GCC as they surged forward in search of reducing the deficit, but failed on every attempt through the stalwart Hikers defence marshalled by the experienced Jerazeno Bell and Robert Fernandes.
GCC in their quest for goals almost paid the price of going down further on several occasions as their defence was left vulnerable, giving the Hikers strikers a few solid chances of increasing their advantage.
While the crowd was entertained, Xavier was determined to keep a clean sheet for the second half and so the Hikers ended the match with the 2-0 victory and the men’s first division prize.
Earlier in the evening, it was GCC ‘B’ who got the better of the Hikers Cadets as the skilful Shaka Gill produced a brilliant reverse stick shot in the 14th minute to give his side the lead. While the Cadets created a few opportunities to equalise, the game was never in doubt as GCC remained firmly in control of the match and secured the men’s second division trophy by a1-0 score line.
The lady GCC Tigers made light work of the Hikers ladies in the opening exhibition match between the two top sides.
Strikers Gabriella Xavier and Kerensa Fernandes with a goal each separated the two sides giving the Tigers the 2 – nil victory.
Teams will now turn to the GT&T National Indoor Championships which is set for October 25-31, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall with Friday, October 29 being a rest day to accommodate boxing.
