At least two persons are now homeless after fire destroyed their home at Sixth Field Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara.
Reports suggest that some time after 22:30 hours on Thursday, residents of the area were alerted after fire was seen coming from the house. At the time no one was in the building.
One neighbour, Maya Madhoo, told this newspaper that the house is owned by her brother Chandra Shakar Madhoo, who now resides on the West Coast Demerara. She said that the house was occupied by the man’s two sons.
The woman said that she could not say what may have started the fire since there was no electricity connected to the house.
Neighbours said that ranks from the Guyana Prison Service responded promptly and prevented the blaze from spreading to the houses next door.
This newspaper was told that in excess of $2M worth of home furnishings were destroyed. Since the place was properly secured no one was able to access the burning building to save any of the furnishings. The matter is being investigated.
The Cummings Lodge fire was the second fire that the fire department was forced to respond to on Thursday evening. Some time later that night firemen responded to another fire in Norton Street, Lodge.
