The final of the Republic Bank sponsored Under-17 Inter Zone cricket competition in Berbice will start today and end on Saturday.
Set for the Albion Community Centre Ground, arch rivals Lower Corentyne and New Amsterdam/Canje will lock horns in what is anticipated to be a high class event with both teams boasting several outstanding players.
Lower Corentyne had defeated Upper Corentyne by 152 runs to advance to the finals while New Amsterdam/Canje crushed West Berbice by 9 wickets.
Lower Corentyne, who will be led by Berbice ‘A’ team selectee Shawn Pereira, will start as favourites but would be aware that performances on the field are important. The powerful batting line-up includes Perreira, Kandasammy Surujnarine, Sachin Dhaniram, Veerapen Permaul, Shailendra Shameer, Arif Chan and Loyden Lewis while pacers Manoj Looknauth and Jamal Jarvis would share the new ball. Spinners Perreira, Lewis, Veerapen Permaul, Shameer and Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai will offer support on a pitch expected to be spin friendly.
New Amsterdam/Canje is no easy push over and is expected to be very competitive. Leading the batting are skipper Linden Austin, Shimron Hetmyer, Romario De Jonge, Kevin Ramdeen, Devendra Jainabi and Totaram Sooknanan.
With a strong Lower Corentyne batting order to bowl to New Amsterdam/Canje would depend heavily on pacers Martin Weatherspoon and Nial Smith and spinners Austin, Ramdeen and Leon Andrews.
The 3rd place playoff would be played on Saturday at the Port Mourant Ground between West Berbice and Upper Corentyne.
Officials of Republic Bank and the Berbice Cricket Board are expected to meet the finalists before the match and also assist with the presentation of prizes.
