Guyana’s ‘Junior Jaguars’ have overcome the early scares and butterflies of playing their first game in the Caribbean Football Union World Under-20 qualifying competition after disposing of the United States Virgin Islands 5-1 on Wednesday evening at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
With that behind them now, a more composed and efficient performance is anticipated against Grenada who lost their opening clash against Jamaica 6-1. The Grenadians looked a solid unit in the initial exchanges against the Jamaicans but lost their way after being reduced to 10 in the 35th minute when Klinton Jones received a red for handling the ball in the box.
Head Coach of the Guyana team Gordon ‘Ultimate Warrior’ Brathwaite while complimenting his charges for the win felt that they could have done much better especially in the area of finishing.
“This is an area that has been haunting us ever since I was a 15 year-old and we will be doing our best to deal with this situation. Our session this afternoon (yesterday) will focus on this and we hope to do much better against Grenada.”
Brathwaite also felt that the young Jaguars tried a bit too hard against the USVI. He is calling for the support of the football fans to rally behind their ambassadors.
“These guys are not representing themselves but their country and therefore needs the support of the fans to cheer them on. We are looking forward to more fans coming out for the games.”
A few changes might be made to the starting lineup that played the opening game, midfielder Marco Marcus played most of the game with an injured nose and might not make the starting team due some
swelling of the face.
Captain and central defender Colin Nelson will be key again to the quest for victory and will bank on good support from the likes of Ryan Crandon, Telson McKinnon up front, Eon Alleyne, Sheldon Holder, Kevin Beaton, Keoma Sullivan, Richie Richards in goal, Deshawn Joseph, Garson Baker, Bevon Moseley and Nicholas Parbhudial.
Today’s first game kicks off at 17:00hrs and features Jamaica’s Junior ‘Reggae Boyz’ against the USVI with the main attraction bringing together the Junior ‘Golden Jaguars’ and the lads from the ‘Spice Isle’ of Grenada.
