Federicks hits century as South beat East Bank E’bo to claim Busta cricket title

A fine unbeaten century by left handed opener Norman Federicks guided South Essequibo to a two wicket victory over East Bank Essequibo in the final of Essequibo Cricket Board, Busta 50 over festival played on Sunday at the Anna Regina Community centre ground on the Essequibo Coast.
South won the toss and inserted East Bank to bat first in front of a fair size crowd.  Led by an unbeaten 52 (2×4, 1×6) from Trevon Garraway, East Bank managed 192-8 after the game was reduced to 42 overs due to overnight rain.  Essequibo U-19 player Kevin Boodie who shared in a fourth wicket partnership of 45 with Sase Narine (15) and added 31 for the sixth wicket stand with Garraway was the next best scorer with 45 (1×4, 3×6).  Mark Braithwaithe contributed 27 which included five fours as Royan Federicks grabbed 3-27 off 8 overs and Dillon Heyliger 2-47 from 9 overs.
South Essequibo started off their reply in fine fashion as brothers Norman and Royan Federicks featured in an opening stand of 119.  Royan was the first to go for 39 (4×4) after which South found themselves in trouble losing five wickets for 11 runs to be 130-6.  Norman continued to soldier his team on and played some lovely shots on both sides of the wicket, then featured in a 19 run seventh wicket partnership with Floyd Henry (05) before Henry was caught and bowled by Braithwaithe with the score at 149.
Rohan Ramdass (12) joined Federicks and added 35 for the eight wicket before Sase Narine had Ramdass caught behind at 184.  Federicks, a former national U-19 player who had earlier brought up his fifty with a pull through mid wicket for four soon achieved the three figure mark as he opened the face of the bat and run the ball down to third man for two.  He hit seven fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 107 and along with Rovin Dusraj who ended on 3 not out saw to victory without further loss in 41.1 overs ending on 195.8.
National Pacer Garraway took 4-33 off 9 overs and Narine 3-28 from 8 overs.
Federicks who received a bat for being adjudged the man-of-the-match also collected another prize for scoring the most runs in the finals.  South who won the Busta competition for the third consecutive year took the winning trophy, while Anthony Adams and Dillon Heyliger received one pair batting gloves and one pair batting pads for being the best bowler and batsman respectively in the preliminary round matches.  Garraway took the prize for picking up the most wickets in the final.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony Managing Director of Guyana Beverage inc. Robert Selman congratulated the winners and said his company still managed to proceed with this year’s sponsorship despite a fire at their parent company S.M. Jaleel in Trinidad and Tobago.
Selman was presented with a  plaque by the chairman of the Essequibo Cricket Board Sheik Ahmad for sponsoring cricket in the county for eight years while the board’s P.R.O Carl Brandon thanked the Busta company for their support.   (Zaheer Mohamed)
