A large crowd turned out yesterday as the Essequibo Island of Wakanaam made its debut as a senior inter-county cricket venue but their team provided little to shout about and the El Dorado 50-over game was all over before lunch.
In brilliant sunshine, Essequibo, who lost to Berbice in the tournament’s opening game at Blairmont last Saturday, elected to bat after winning the toss and crashed to 74 all out in 30.2 overs as 9 wickets tumbled for 35 runs.
Teenage leg-spinner Amir Khan made an auspicious start to his senior inter-county career with 5-10 from 7.2 overs and got support from off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed (2-9 from 4 overs), Chris Barnwell (2-15 from 5 overs) and under-19 left-arm pacer Andre Stoll (1-5 from 5 overs).
Demerara, sending a strong message to the national selectors that the versatile Barnwell could produce as an opening batsmen began their reply like a house on fire. The right-handed Barnwell plundered 6 fours in a cameo 31 to spearhead the visitors to 80-3 in 11 overs and their 2nd consecutive win in the 3-team competition.
Norman Fredericks who scored 94 in the opening game again looked solid if not dominating against the new ball pair Kellon Carmichael and the impressive Stoll and along with his brother and fellow left-hander Royan added 22 before Stoll removed Royan (9) in the 9th over.
Norman (18) was then bowled by Barnwell with a ball that kept low as Essequibo, the only team never to win a senior local inter-county title, slipped to 39-2 in the 16th over.
The crafty Khan, a former West Indies under-15 player then struck at 49-3 when Navin Bahadur (15) was taken by Shivnarine Chanderpaul at slip off his bat and pad, much to the dismay of the raucous partisan crowd.
When Demerara began their reply on the small
ground and good pitch, Chanderpaul and Barnwell were used to open the innings with Travis Dowlin pushed down to his more familiar middle order position and Rajendra Chandrika was rested to facilitate Khan’s participation yesterday.
The pugnacious Barnwell, who could open the batting next week in the Regional One-Day competition in Jamaica, took 12 off Trevor Benn’s opening over before driving the pacer through mid-on and mid-off in the 3rd over of the innings before pulling lively under-19 pacer Rensford Beaton to deep mid-wicket at 40-1 in the 4th over.
Steven Jacobs (11) lofted left-arm spinner Robert Moore to long-off at 64-2 while national under-19 left-arm spinner Anthony Adams grabbed his biggest victim in his career when he had the reliable Chanderpaul caught and bowled for 8 at 69-3.
Leon Johnson followed up his 11-ball undefeated 20 against Berbice with 10 not out while Derwin Christian who finished the game in style with a huge six off Moore, ended unbeaten on 10 with a six and a four.
In an interest to pacify the crowd after the early finish, both teams agreed to play a 10/10 match before leaving the Island where Guyana Captain and West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan was born 30 years ago.
Demerara and Berbice will clash in the final from 13:30hrs in a day/night affair on Saturday at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence.
Meanwhile, Demerara beat Essequibo in the 10/10 match to take home $100,000 donated by Kishan Sarwan while the losers collected $50,000 contributed by Anand Sanasie.
Demerara, led by 40 from Barnwell, 38 from Chanderpaul and 36 from Johnson reached 143-4 off their 10 overs. Delon Heyliger took 3-30 from his two overs.
Essequibo were then restricted to 94-6 off their 10 overs despite 19 from Heyliger. Kellon Carmichael had 2-16 and left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun 2-11 for the winners.
