Its early days yet and the boxers scheduled to participate in the 9th edition of the ProAm boxing extravaganza are intensifying their activities at various gyms countrywide. Yesterday afternoon, as is customary, the various principals convened at the Abdools and Abdools Insurance Brokers, the office of President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Peter Abdool, to affix their respective signatures on the contract that culminates the deal.
They activity was devoid of the bragging and boasting that usually characterize these events. Nevertheless, even amidst the silence, one could detect the purpose in each of the fighter’s demeanor. Fans interested in assessing their progress may visit the respective gyms around the city and its environs.
Mandessa Moses is operating out of the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis gym (ALBG) in Albouystown and so too are Mark Austin and Cecil Smith who oppose Barbadian Revlon Lake and Clive Atwell, respectively. Patrick Boston trains at the Forgotten Youth Foundation while his opponent, Simeon Hardy is at the ALBG.
The ProAm boxing card is now a fixed feature, staged on the last Friday of every month. The card also entertains participation from the amateur boxing fraternity but to date the executives of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) have not submitted the names of the boxers that are to comprise this month end’s card. Other stakeholders in the programme are the National Communications Network, which carries a live broadcast of the action and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
