Doctors at the Davis Memorial Hospital in D’Urban Backlands were last night battling to save the life of a male newborn who was rescued from a bushy yard after his mother died while delivering him.
When Kaieteur News arrived at the scene, the mother’s body had already been taken to a hospital mortuary.
The woman, known only as Sharon, was found dead in her Section ‘D’, South Sophia home around 19:30 hrs by a nine-year-old daughter.
However, there was no sign of the baby.
A few residents, aided by the woman’s husband, Tony Jones, decided to scour the backyard after some neighbours claimed that they had heard faint cries outside.
Using flashlights, and with the help of the Kaieteur News reporter, they eventually located the baby boy in a clump of bushes.
The Kaieteur News reporter immediately took the child to the Davis Memorial Hospital. Accompanying him was a female neighbour Donna Niewenkirk. The baby was immediately placed in an incubator and given oxygen.
Sources at the hospital expressed amazement that the baby, believed to have been born prematurely, survived the ordeal.
