Another execution style killing rocked the city last night, sending residents of Campbellville Housing Scheme into a state of panic and police investigators into overdrive. This time two men died.
Following a fusillade of bullets, Patrick Goodluck of Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, and North Sophia, a father of three, lay dead in his car while an accomplice whose name was given as Godfrey Manselleck called ‘Mosquito’, lay dead outside the passenger door on the grass verge, his body riddled.
Manselleck’s face was so disfigured that initially it was difficult to recognize him. It was not until persons who knew that he was with Goodluck identified him.
Police described the shooting as one that bears a striking similarity to one in Cummings Lodge a few weeks ago. Five persons died in that shooting.
Reports are that Goodluck had just left his children and their mother at their Campbellville Housing scheme home around 20:00 hours when the attack occurred.
The dead man’s daughter, Saskia, recalled that he had just left them after promising to bring money to her school for her to attend her school sports today.
She said that her father had spent about an hour at their Campbellville home when he received a call on his cellular phone.
This call caused him to leave in a hurry.
“Somebody call he on he cell phone and he tell he cousin, ‘Leh we go long’. He cousin say ‘no’, he ain’t goin nowhere. ‘You and Mosquito go long’,” Saskia said.
Shortly after Goodluck left, Saskia heard the gunshots but did not know that it was her father until the tragic news reached her a few minutes later.
Eyewitnesses said that as Goodluck was emerging from Royal Drive in his dark coloured Toyota Carina 212 motorcar, the gunmen opened fire with what are suspected to be assault rifles.
Neither Goodluck, nor his friend, stood a chance as the gunmen riddled the vehicle.
Manselleck exited the vehicle but was brought down in a hail of bullets.
The car ended up on the bridge of the Redeemer Primary School.
Residents in the neighbourhood recalled hearing several rapid bursts of gunfire followed by several single shots.
One eyewitness said that the gunmen, who had parked their car on Sixth Street, near Stone Avenue, calmly walked back to their vehicle and drove away after the operation.
A police patrol vehicle was approaching the scene but when the gunshots rang out, the driver immediately turned into Echillibar Villas for cover and remained there until the shooting was over.
It is not yet clear who the real target was but according reports, Goodluck had been previously convicted for murder.
However, he was freed on appeal.
Police using all the equipment available to them, combed the scene and recovered several spent 7.62 shells.
They will now try to ascertain who is responsible for this latest execution style killing.
