The Tradewind Tankers Nationwide Volleyball Tournament that involved most of the top teams in the country produced a lifeline for the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF), but more importantly the sport.
Volleyball as many could attest has been in a state of paralysis for sometime now, but thanks to Castrol Strikers, they somehow managed to convince the sponsor to plug money into a competition that was designed to bring out the best in terms of ability among the clubs.
The whole aim according to the organisers was to give all the competing teams the opportunity to excel in whichever format they felt stronger in, while it also allowed fans the opportunity to witness a lengthy tournament run in a league-style so that teams that started the competition slowly got the chance to recover over the duration of the event.
President of the GVF Lennie Shuffler speaking at the presentation ceremony said he was encouraged by the work and foresight of the Organisers, adding that the well run tournament has helped to energise the sport once again, while it also forces the Body to maintain the momentum gained through the hosting of the tournament. Shuffler during his speech promised to work assiduously to organise a tournament of similar stature which is tentatively scheduled to be staged in November.
“I’m going to get down to work immediately and I want to announce here tonight that the standard exhibited throughout the tournament was high and no doubt it is a fillip for the sport,” Shuffler said.
Another heartening feature of the tournament was the fact that teams from as far as Berbice attended all the segments that lasted over three months and it surely demonstrated the commitment of the players which many recognise must be duplicated by the GVF executive.
The general view is that once the sport is properly organised and publicised it could once again enjoy the popularity and participation it benefitted from a few years ago.
Of note was the fact that the fan support grew at every venue and it just shows how important it is to advertise and market the sport aggressively, it is one of the main ingredients to attract sponsors.
Castrol Strikers initiative provided the catalyst the sport so badly needed now the onus is on the main stakeholder to ensure that it maintains that thrust.
