The ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) says that Guyana has been transformed since the holding of the first free and fair elections on October 5, 1992.
“In every area, we have made great progress. Our economy has recovered and today we have one of the best economic situations in the region. In the process, we were able to reduce the foreign debt considerably. In 1992, it was some 700% of our GDP. Today it is approximately 40 per cent,” the party said in a statement.
The party added: “In the social sector, in which all of our people benefit, Guyana has excelled, becoming a model for other countries. In health and education, we have witnessed a virtual revolution.”
In a statement to mark 18 years since the elections of 1992, the PPP also boasted of having abolished the hated ‘means test’ and increased pensions continuously to senior citizens. The party said that its “pro-poor” policies have certainly made a great impact in reducing poverty in the country.
According to the party, the PPP Government has also restored Guyana’s physical infrastructure and has expanded them in every sector.
Because of this, the party said that it is therefore “not surprising that President (Bharrat) Jagdeo and the PPP/Civic are enjoying the very high popularity in our country.
Every unbiased observer would note the far way we have come in the relatively short period.”
The party said that it is the PPP/Civic Government that is now poised to take Guyana forward to greater heights “as we strive to fulfill the aspirations of the Guyanese people.”
The PPP described October 5, 1992 as is undoubtedly one of the most important dates in Guyana’s history, saying it marked the return of democracy to Guyana.
“The holding of free and fair elections on that date 18 years ago was itself a culmination of a long struggle to restore democracy in Guyana. In that process, the PPP played a leading role,” the PPP stated.
From independence to the mid-1970s, the PPP said it fought almost alone, and subsequently, more forces joined in the struggle to remove a dictatorial regime in Guyana.
The party said that international solidarity also played a major role, and hailed the role of former US President Jimmy Carter and the Carter Centre in assisting the struggle for free and fair elections.
“The PPP had always held the view that socio-economic progress was not possible in any sustainable way without political democracy. Life so far has proven that the Party was correct,” the party stated.
