Guyana experienced some amount of mixed fortune on the opening day of its competition at the XIX Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India yesterday.
In Swimming, Jessica Stephenson swam a personal best 35.03 in the 50m breaststroke to finish 20th out of the 31 competitors in that event.
In squash Ashley Khalil lost her first round match to Scotland’s, Franin Gillen-Buchert 11-2, 11-3 and 11-6 while Nicolette Fernandes beat Nimji Khaaliqa of Kenya 11-0, 11-3 and 11-1 but then lost to number eight seeded Australian, Donna Urquhart 12-10, 11-8 and 11-7.
In Table Tennis, Guyana secured a walkover from Dominica. The competition in the multi-event Commonwealth Games continues today with 15 gold medals on offer in several disciplines.
Schedule for the next couple of days will see Swimming tomorrow where Guyana will compete in the 200m and 100m women’s breaststroke.
Athletics also tomorrow with 100m Men’s first round, 400m Women’s first round, 5000m Men’s final and 100m Men’s second round.
Thursday will see the 100m Men’s semis, 400m Women’s semis, October 8 the 400m Women’s final and 100m Men’s final.
Track Cycling is on today with the 40km Points race heats, tomorrow 40km Points race final, Thursday 20km scratch race, October 10 the 112 km Road race women and the 168 km Road race men, October 13, the 29 km Time trial women and the 40 km Time trial men.
Rifle Shooting will commence on Saturday with Pairs over 300 yards and Singles 300 yards; October 10 – Pairs 500 yards and Singles 500 yards; October 11 – Pairs 600 yards and Singles 600 yards; October 12 – Pairs 900 yards and Singles 900 yards; October 13 – Pairs 1000 yards and Singles 1000 yards.
The Rugby Sevens team will bound into action on October 11 vs Scotland then vs New Zealand.
Guyana also battle Canada the same day.
