Strategic Plan is priority
Following what was described as a “productive meeting” between the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), another such forum was held at the National Sports Commission (NSC) level to advance a Strategic Plan. The President, Henry Greene and Executive of the GTTA had met with the minister to discuss an extensive Strategic Plan for the development of table tennis and following that meeting there was another forum with the NSC to discuss implementation.
Kaieteur Sport understands that the five major areas that were discussed included the hosting of the National Championship, distribution of tables for schools selected under the Table Tennis for Schools Project, areas for collaboration between the GTTA and NSC, the NSC input into the National Table Tennis Schools’ Festival and an outline of the association’s plan and programmes for the remainder of the year and a programme projection.
Greene reportedly expressed enthusiasm over the Table Tennis for Schools Project, indicating it is one of the aspects of the sport’s Strategic Plan that should be implemented urgently. He stated that the idea is in keeping with an international initiative.
The GTTA President and Commissioner of Police furthered the possibility of the NSC being able to accommodate the schools’ project as part of its national plan for sport in schools. The Director of Sport, Neil Kumar reportedly welcomed the proposal.
“He (Greene) felt that table tennis must be played at all levels, and the mission of his Executive is to provide the systems, mechanisms and environment for the harnessing of the sport at the recreational and competition levels,” a release indicated.
As part of the implementation of the schools’ programme, it was also disclosed that a method to circulate the tables that the GTTA received as part of its sponsorship deal with Stag International was discussed among the major stakeholders in the importation.
The Ministry, NSC and GTTA played crucial roles in offsetting the cost related to importing the equipment from India-based, Stag. The tables will be one of the collaborative efforts of the NSC and GTTA in getting the sport back into the schools’ system.
“The GTTA President indicated that it was the association’s plan to see primary schools targeted and personnel trained in the next phase of the programme. He pledged the GTTA support for the successful implementation and sustainability of the project” the release continued.
It was stated that the launching of the project and the list of schools to be incorporated initially in the programme are being fine-tuned. Additionally, the GTTA will assess the schools to figure out which of the institutions will need technical and coaching support.
