Dear Editor,
I have always applauded any high state official who has demonstrated an undeniable capacity to get the job done. The latter end product has always been the conclusivity by which officials are measured in terms of competency and leadership. But very often, and quite contradictory, getting the job done, rather than being praised and appreciated, often attracts unfair and cruel criticism from general society.
For many years, there have appeared in the local media complaints about encumbrances and structures without official permission on state reserves, and as to how unsightly these are to environmental aesthetics and in many cases hazardous to the personal well being of citizens.
Quite rightly, these public opinions would call for the removal of such structures. From observation, many of the errant parties were relied upon to comply as honourable and law abiding citizens; and while many did, most blatantly refused. And so it was this category, especially, that attracted the attention of the Works and Communication Sector.
Let us be clear on this point; that due to a variety of factors, particularly gross laxity on the part of the Municipal Authorities, there has been a total breakdown in monitoring building works and related activities in the City and its immediate environs. No Guyanese who is fair-minded and conscientious can dare deny this lawless state, with many taking advantage of the anarchy.
So here comes the Head of the mandated sector, with cabinet approval no doubt, who has succeeded where many in the past would have failed. By more than a mile he has shown how to get important assignments done, for he has taken a no–nonsense and uncompromising approach to his task. This has attracted some very unfair criticisms in the public domain, and rather vile comments, privately: all unfair because the Sector Head’s only sin is that he has been getting the long overdue job, successfully done and curbing the illegalities and lawlessness.
Many in this category often speak in laudatory terms of the environmental order existing in other countries they have visited. But they often conveniently forget that the citizens in those states promptly observe their laws, and that infringements are swiftly sanctioned.
I agree that there may have been unfortunate instances, but some order had to prevail.
Hats off to the Works and Communications Sector!
Rodwell Jones
