Dear Editor,
I was very pleased with the letter that commented on the new and rapid decadence that is besetting Annandale, and the country as a whole. In fact, just last week, one such junky (as per the letter) barely escaped my attempt to catch and maul him.
This ‘petty career’ thief scaled my fence and was attempting to make off with items such as my school haversack. My anger allowed him that modicum of an opportunity to escape. In the end, after my fury abated, I surmised that it all ended well. One of us could have been maimed/dead. Now here are the real issues.
Did I call the police? No, and I will never again. They are maestros of dereliction, and this is simply a Guyanese policing culture. I feel sorry for the few victims (one recently) who have been beaten and/or killed by overzealous civic-minded villagers. But then again, if the guardians of the law are reneging on their commitment and duties, then people have a right to do the necessary in order to have peace and safety.
I say this based on my experience. Just about two years ago, when the night-time scouring-stealing by these vagrants was not so established, I reported my misfortune to the Vigilance Police Station, and guess what?
The issue went unnoticed. I have called umpteen times about noise disturbance, wife beating etc. and these uniformed misfits are impossible to stimulate. Yet, I see them visiting select people at certain hours and in the process of ‘cowboying’ they make passes at the women in the village. So my advice is that vulnerable villagers protect themselves by whatever means possible. Should the issue redound in a death, the ‘Vigilance Boys’ will take an eternity to respond, and by then, you can make good on your silence or a proper excuse.
The second issue as regards the supposed school drop outs is one that will burgeon in time to come.
Both in Annandale North and South, groups can be seen all day – swearing, gambling, drinking, impeding traffic, making passes at students and I have never seen officers of the law accosting them. My question relates to the legality of these adolescents being where they are and doing what they are doing during school hours.
I mean, is there not something about school being legal? I hope a concerted effort be made to address and arrest this horrible situation which seems destined to get even worse and more wide-spread.
