Stabroek Market murder…
Ranks from the Tactical Services Unit yesterday afternoon arrested a mother of two whom they say is wanted in connection with the murder of market vendor Letuica Rodriquez, called ‘Mama’ even as relatives claimed a case of mistaken identity.
Rodriguez was stabbed in the region of the heart two Sunday nights ago at the Stabroek Market Square, allegedly by the child mother of her reputed husband.
The arrested woman’s 14-year old daughter told this newspaper that the police had gone to their Yogani Park, East Bank Demerara home, sometime around 01:00hrs on Sunday to arrest her mother.
“Mommy said she not going with them because they didn’t have a warrant,” the teenager said.
The teen further told Kaieteur News that police came back to the residence later on Sunday afternoon to arrest her mother.
Another relative said that the woman works at the market, but does not know the deceased, although she bears a striking resemblance to the suspected killer.
Furthermore, the relative asserts that the woman was not in the city when the incident happened.
“She was not even there when this girl got murdered,” the relative posited. Moreso the relatives of the arrested woman are also adamant that she has no pending matters in court.
Relatives of the dead woman had told Kaieteur News that the suspect and Rodriguez had several matters before the courts.
Up to press time the woman was still being detained at the Brickdam Police Station.
Anastasia Gordon, the dead woman’s sister told this publication, that the suspect and her sister had an ongoing feud for the past seven years.
She described her sister’s killer as the aggressive one, who would constantly torment the now dead Rodriguez whenever she saw her.
Gordon recounted that prior to her death, Rodriguez had tried to make a report against the suspect, but the police allegedly turned her away.
The woman explained that her sister had told her that the suspect had gone to the Stabroek Market Square and threatened her.
