Under the theme “Working for the Elderly, Celebrating their contributions to Guyana”, the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security has designated October as the “Month of the Elderly.”
Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Priya Manickchand, before a packed audience of residents of the Palms, staff, senior personnel from her Ministry, and invitees from other homes for the elderly, launched activities in observance of the special month, last Friday.
Minister Manickchand said that the month of activities affords the opportunity for giving credit to the nation’s senior citizens, and doing things that will make their lives better, as well as highlighting to the nation just how fortunate it has been to have senior citizens in its midst.
She said that without this very special category, “none of us could have been”, thanking them in the process for the role played in the development of the nation’s children.
The Palms not only provides a shelter so that those in care there can enjoy their golden years, but also offers the type and quality of meals to maintain the proper health, as well as a new building for more recreational facilities. The latter will be ready this month for the designated activity.
With reference to the 230 residents at the institution, the Minister assured that Government will continue to offer free shelter and care, because of its compassion for the elderly.
A series of activities has been planned to give special recognition to senior citizens across Guyana. These activities include church services, sporting events, hosting of Health and Wellness checks at various hospitals and clinics, and distribution of hampers.
Over the years, the number of centenarians has been increasing in Guyana while the life expectancy rate is now at 67.
