For months, farmers in Linden have been voicing their concerns about a place to market their produce.
The farmers told Kaieteur News that when their crops have been harvested, the problem lies with a suitable place to have on the market.
It was also alleged that when farmers attempt to occupy sections of the pavement, officers of the Linden Town Council will intervene.
Some even had their produce taken away on numerous occasions. The farmers are requesting permission to have a section on the waterfront to ply their trade.
The exercise, if granted will only see the farmers selling twice per week. On the other hand, Chairman of the Interim Management Committee of the town of Linden, Orin Gordon has been refuting claims being made by the farmers.
He confirmed that the wharf at the Mackenzie Market was constructed with the cash crop farmers in mind but for some reason they were not interested.
“That wharf was built for the farmers of Linden but we only saw three stalls being occupied,” said Gordon.
The Council then move to have a shed built in front of the Wismar Market to accommodate the said farmers but the move proved futile.
According the Chairman, it is not wise to have all the sellers over on the Mackenzie shore, which is very congested.
Several weeks ago, President Bharrat Jagdeo visited the mining town and made several promises to residents.
One was to construct a tarmac on the western side of the Mackenzie Bridge to accommodate those desirous of selling their crops.
The project is already underway and will be concluding soon.
