Tucked away in 8×10 booths, small business holders could easily be lost in the throng upon throng who pass through GuyExpo, the country’s premier trade and investment exposition now on at the Sophia Exhibition Complex.
And it’s not the crowds who mostly make a passing glance that is a bother so much. Some are bound to stop and taking a closer look. The price for the space – $35,000 – seems just a bit too much for first timers like 23-year-old Alyce Cameron.
A graduate of the Burrowes School of Art, she looks GUYEXPO could open new doors for her. Her favourite skill is portraits, and she hopes that the charcoal piece of Young and Restless star Shemar Moore will fetch the $20,000 she deserves for it. In fact, she has other portraits, like the coloured-pencil Jada-Pinkett Smith.
Alyce hopes that she can sell off all of the items she brought. Kaieteur News caught up with her busy designing another hand bag. Her hand-painted bags have been selling the most, and she is making sure she can satisfy the demand.
Lloyd McGregor and his wife, Habibah, share a booth with Kamela Khan. Even so, the space rental is still too much. But they hope that their unique items will go down well with lovers of art and craft.
McGregor can make anything out of coconut shells – from champagne glasses to lamp shades and ornaments.
Khan makes bamboo craft but this year she has opted for leather boxes and tissue holders. She has been to previous GuyExpos and says the event creates more business opportunities. It is not rare that persons would go looking for her at the La Penitence Market because someone would have seen her products at GuyExpo and made a recommendation.
Wi-Fi Dequan is another of the small craft businesses looking to cash in on GuyExpo. The company has been in existence for many years.
Mea Murray, who is manning the booth for the first time, said that the hand-crafted footwear and bags are on show and sale so that Guyanese can appreciate local products.
