Skeldon estate GM denies he stole, wants retraction

Vishnu Panday, the former General Manager of the Skeldon sugar estate, who resigned last week, is refuting an article carried in the Kaieteur News edition of Tuesday.
In a letter dated Wednesday sent by his lawyer, Hubert Rodney, Panday demanded an apology and a retraction of the story which he said that the article was libelous.
“Your news item erroneously stated that my client had or has in his possession property belonging to the Guyana Sugar Corporation, his former employer without its leave, permission or licence.
“The news item also erroneously stated that my client was asked to resign his position as manager of the Skeldon Estate by reason of the said unlawful possession of property belonging to the Corporation. The innuendo is clear that Panday is a thief,” the lawyer said in his letter to Kaieteur News.
According to the lawyer, Panday wants a retraction of the “falsehood” or the newspaper would face legal proceedings in the High Court.
The article had said that officials of the Corporation on Monday “confirmed that General Manager of the estate, Vishnu Panday, handed in his resignation last week after air condition units, among other things, were found at his Turkeyen home, East Coast Demerara. The units were said to belong to the estate.”
Kaieteur News was told that Panday had claimed that he was given permission for the articles. However, GuySuCo officials had felt otherwise and had launched an investigation.
The letter did not refute the fact that Panday had resigned nor that articles were found at his home.
Nor did the letter speak of a section of the report that said there were questions over a tractor belonging to the Skeldon estate that was sold for $3M but reflected on receipts as a lower amount.
The lawyer’s letter also did not refer to another section of the report that furniture that was purchased for the estate were allegedly sent elsewhere.
Nowhere did Kaieteur News say that Mr. Panday was a ‘thief’, as was stated in the lawyer’s letter.
