– records tumble, Perry runs fastest 200m
By Edison Jefford
The writings were on the wall for the Guyana Defence Force, but false hope generated some kind of optimism in the soldiers’ camp heading into the final day of the Joint Services Track and Field Championships at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.
That burning candle that the soldiers trusted for their light quickly burned-out as the Guyana Police Force built on their dominance over the two preceding days to re-arrest the Joint Services title that they lost last year to the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) with a dominant performance.
Police amassed 616 points while GDF merely managed 414 points taking the runner-up position ahead of Guyana Fire Service that finished third with 140 points and the Guyana Prisons Service, which took the fourth position with 115 points.
The competition did not fail to live up to the competitive rivalry between the Police and Defence Force as emerging talent Police’s, Winston George forced Defence Force’s Rupert Perry, Patrick King and Quincy Clarke to turn in record-breaking performances.
Clarke ran 10.4 seconds in winning the premier 100m race, breaking his 10.5 seconds record that he registered last year in the process. Perry was second in 10.5 seconds while George was in the third position with 10.7 seconds in the most popular race.
Perry, who stated earlier this year that this is his time and he will make the most of it, lived up to expectations when he blistered the 200m staggers on his way to running the fastest time ever this decade with 20.8 seconds, which also set a new meet record.
Perry’s time was faster than the 21.05 Rawle Greene did overseas on a rubberised track. It was a benchmark performance for the athlete, who will definitely make a claim for national selection at the Athletic Association of Guyana level. He made his point.
George was second in 21.0 seconds while King finished third in 21.5 seconds. Nadine Rodrigues claimed the women’s version of the 200m race in 25.5 seconds taking revenge on Leota Babb for her loss to her team-mate in the 100m race earlier in the day.
King had his chance to ensure that he got into the history books when he smashed the 400m record for the meet, perfectly timing his approach in the race, and leaving just enough in reserve to pace him down the homestretch as George offered a close challenge.
King turned in 49.3 seconds, which was better than Winston George’s 49.8 seconds that he ran in 2009 at the same meet.
George was second in 49.5 seconds while Mark Edwards took third in the 400m race in 50.9 seconds. King was the last premier record breaker.
