Dear Editor,
Many businesses on Regent Street and its proximity are hurting because of the unfair and illegal business activity taking place on the pavements and parapets of the city’s streets.
Many of these illegitimate vendors don’t even have a business licence and they are selling items free of VAT, competing against genuine stores that have the expenses of rent, light bill and other overheads to deal with.
It is also perceived that many of these street businesses, especially the DVD vendors are actually a front for some well known businessmen who see this as a way of cheating on VAT.
If the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) look into where the bulk of this stock is originating from and the ridiculous low prices they are being sold for, they might find a large money laundering operation at work.
If this situation is allowed to continue many well known businesses will have to close their doors and be consumed by these illegal pavement and street vendors along with their vulture suppliers.
