Guyana boxing contingent headed by Manager Steve Ninvalle (centre) and Coach Terrence Poole (second right) along with boxers (from left) Clevon Rock, Dexter Jordon and Devon Boatswain pose for a photo.
Manager of the Guyana boxing team Steve Ninvalle speaking with Kaieteur Sport via telephone from Delhi, India yesterday, disclosed that the boxers have settled in nicely and held their first set of practice sessions under the watchful eyes of Coach Terrence Poole, at the Games Village and the Delhi University.
The team which comprises Clevon Rock, a former silver medallist at the Junior Commonwealth Games, Devon Boatswain, who attended the CAC Games in Puerto Rico earlier this year and Dexter Jordon, a bronze medallist at this year’s CAC Games are the Guyana representatives in the boxing competition.
According to Ninvalle, the boxers were engaged in sparring, skipping and also did some punching on the heavy bag and are being monitored carefully by Poole as they continue their preparations to get into action on October 5.
“So far we’ve seen a high level of discipline demonstrated from the guys, while we’ve also spoken to them on the importance of being good ambassadors for their country.
Ninvalle added that the boxers know that they are competing at a higher level than that of the CAC Games and have promised to do their best to make Guyana proud. “They know that it is an uphill battle to gain a medal, especially with the fact that some 48 countries are participating in the boxing competition, but so far they’ve responded positively to training and I’m heartened with their efforts as well as the technical expertise being imparted by Poole,” Ninvalle pointed out.
Meanwhile, Poole speaking with the newspaper said that the boxers experienced some breathing discomfort during the initial training session, but they’ve since adjusted and are working out well.
“Everybody has settled in comfortably and preparing seriously, they know what is expected of them,” Poole said.
He indicated that the further development and support for amateur boxing is resting heavily on the performance of the three fighters. “We are all aware that winning a medal at the Commonwealth Games is not an easy task, but it has been done before and the guys are determined to return with medals,” Poole informed.
Jordon will fight in the flyweight category, while Rock is classified as a lightweight and Boatswain campaigns in the middleweight division.
Guyana’s Winfield Braithwaite won a gold medal in the light-welterweight class at the 1978 Games in Edmonton, Canada.
Additionally, Ninvalle disclosed that the entire Guyana contingent arrived safely at the Games Village and managers of the respective teams met and held a meeting with Chef-de-Mission Garfield Wiltshire.
Ninvalle also reported that rifle shooter Ransford Goodluck came down with a bout of flu, but was responding positively to treatment, while all the other athletes seemed to be in fine mettle and rearing to get into action.
