Last year Berbice emerged victorious in both the senior Inter County 4-day and 50 overs competitions and today they begin their title defense against Essequibo in the opening round of the El Dorado 50-overs tournament from 09:30hrs at Blairmont.
Considered the whipping boys of senior Inter County cricket, Essequibo are more competitive in limited overs cricket and if they bat well on what should be a ‘slow turner’ the match should not be one-sided.
The Fredericks siblings, Skipper Ryan and Norman, will want to give Essequibo a solid opening partnership and the omission of the genuinely quick Brandon Bess from the Berbcie line up could be a relief for the lads from Guyana’s largest County.
Bess, who made his Test debut this year against South Africa in Barbados, is on the stand by list although left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, who like Bess was a member of the West Indies Academy (HPC) team, returns to strengthen the Berbice bowling.
A Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) official yesterday explained that Bess was not selected because he did not make himself available on his return home.
Brothers Delon and Jason Heyliger will need to bat well while Navishal Pooran, Balchan Shivamber, Ricardo Adams and Narendra Mandolall will also have to contribute against a powerful Berbice side, playing in their own backyard.
While Bess could have posed a huge threat with this pace, West Indies Under-19 pacer Keon Joseph, who has already played first-class cricket, is not far behind Bess in pace and he and the hard working Esuan Crandon could share the new ball and provide lots of challenges for the opposition.
Berbice face the stronger Demerara in their second game at Bourda tomorrow and could ‘rest’ Esuan Crandon for that encounter and give talented Micheal Newland some exposure. But as usual spin should feature prominently for Berbicians.
Leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo will team up with his spin-twin Permaul while Narsingh Deonarine, Royston Crandon, Sewnarine Chattergoon and Eugene LaFluer can all provide competent spin support at this level.
The Berbice top order is loaded with National senior players and if the hosts bat first and the batters get ‘stuck in’ the Essequibians could spend a lot of time chasing leather and a massive total.
Out-of-form Sewnarine Chattergoon should be a lot more comfortable in the 50-over format than in the ‘slam-bang’ Twenty20 version and along with the attacking Richard Ramdeen could give Berbice a solid start against the new ball pair of Trevor Benn, who toured with the First Class team this year, and lively National youth pacer Rensford Beaton.
Deonarine, Skipper Assad Fudadin, Royston Crandon, the pugnacious Jonathon Foo, Krishnadat Ramoo, Wicket Keeper Anthony Bramble, Delbert Hicks, Esuan Crandon, Permaul and LaFluer are all capable of big scores at this level.
Experienced left-arm spinner Robert Moore, who plays division one cricket in Berbice, leads a promising but inexperienced Essequibo spin attack which includes National left-arm spinners Anthony Adams and Herry Greene.
With the non-selection of specialist off-spinners Andrew Williams and Nazeer Mohamed, Jason Heyliger could be asked to provide variety with his off-spin.
Former National youth all-rounder Ryan Hercules recently returned home after another successful season in England but an Essequibo Cricket Board official claimed that he was not considered for selection because the selectors were unaware of his whereabouts.
Umpires Samwaroo and Brush will be in charge on the field today and admission is free.
