Four teams from the Essequibo Zone registered victories when first round action in the District of Columbia Metro Organisation (DCMCO) 15 OVERS round hand knockout Country wide Softball cricket Tournament concluded on September 26. The tournament organized by he Guyana Softball League also saw the Lower East Coast registering three winners and Hot Steppers registering the highest totals so far in the tournament.
Hot Steppers started their campaign to top honours when they mauled Young Guns by 91 runs. They won the toss and elected to bat amassing 206-9 in 15 overs with Mark Persaud (65) and Nigel Ramdial (60) sharing a 5th wicket partnership worth 146 runs and eventually taking the batting honours. For the opposition, Bobby Chan took 4-28 from 3 overs.
Young Guns turned in a spirited performance in reply but could only muster 115 -9 when their allotted 15 overs expired. Wasim Baljit (25) and Bobby Chan (15) were the principal batsmen.
Over at the Success Ground, El Commandante defeated Tractor XI by 8 wickets after the latter team called correctly and elected to take first strike. They could only manage 82 all out in 14.5 overs with Latchman Seelall (31) taking the batting honours.
El Commandante then lashed off the required total in 5.1 overs. Roy Seebarran returned with the bat to score 35 while bowling for the opposition, Bassoo Rampersaud (2-4 from 1 over) took the honours.
The action continued later in the day when Young Superstars destroyed De Club by 59 runs. They batted first and scored 131 all out in 14.5 overs. Teddy Sankar (25) top
from 3 overs) was the best bowler for the opposition.
In reply De Club was mesmerized by Richard Mohan (6-11 from 3 overs) including four wickets in four balls as they were bundled out for 72 in 13.3 overs. No batsman reached double figures as extras top scored with 19.
Other results were, Roots XI defeated Rising Stars by 3 wickets; Die Hard Brothers XI hammered All Star XI by 9 wickets; Young Warriors defeated Lion Heart XI by 50 runs and Adventure XI defeated Airy Hall XI by 5 wickets.
Meanwhile, the competition will continue this weekend with the other zones joining the action. Several lucrative prizes would be up for grabs including the winner’s prize of $150,000 and a trophy; the runner up receives $75,000 and atrophy while the Most Valuable Player takes home $20,000 and a trophy. The Man of the Match in the finals takes home $10,000 while the best batsman of the tournament gets $10,000. There will also be a special prize for the best bowler ($10,000) while the region finalist wins a trophy and a cash incentive.
