-Joint Services title on the line today
By Edison Jefford
Subtle rivalry turned into public controversy when the melting pot of competitive energy reached its zenith this week at the 2010 Joint Services Championships. It will not change on the final day of competition today at the Police Sports Club Ground.
The reality is that both the Police Force and Defence Force have made it clear that when it comes to the Joint Services title they are anything but friends. The competitive forces between them will continue to be as evident as when the event began Tuesday.
There has only been rumours about the Defence Force not competing today, but what has been at the centre of controversy is the protest the Police Force filed against them alleging that there was an inappropriate addition of athletes to the Defence Force.
Defence Force Coach Robert Chisholm has since denied the allegation, stating that those athletes were part of the Force since April this year. He, in turn, accused the police of “cheating” with the intent of manipulating on-field systems for an advantage.
Kaieteur Sport understands that there was a meeting yesterday to deal with the situation, but was not privy to any information coming out that meeting. Chisholm said yesterday that he is moving ahead with getting his team ready for the battle today.
“We know that we got this track part of it today covered. Look and see what will happen today at Eve Leary. They can’t beat us in nothing,” Chisholm said, adding that he was still optimistic that they will be able to overhaul Police’s 132 points lead.
“We will clear that (the lead) early. They can’t beat us in nothing else,” Chisholm reiterated. The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Coach believes that he has to ensure that all his athletes rise to the challenge after their morale dropped with Police’s protest.
Police will head into today’s competition with 231 points while GDF is on 99 points; the Guyana Fire Service is on 57 points while the Guyana Prison Service is on 36 points. Today is D-Day for the competing services as the Defence Force target Police.
It will be a full fledged athletics war today at the Police Sports Club. Defence Force believes that is has the artillery to hunt the Police that has surged ahead after only 12 finals. The Police Coach, Lyndon Wilson is confident that Police has the title secured.
